BIOLEACHING OF COPPER AND IRON FROM GRASBERG ORE USING Acidithiobacillus sp.

Abstract


Bioleaching of pyritic chalcopyrite has been done with two different ore samples (4.15% and 84.13% in pyrite) from PT Freeport Indonesia, Papua. The effect of bioleaching was evaluated using bioreactor examinations. The main parameters including ion concentration, pH value and redox potential value were examined in bioleaching. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), pH meter and Oxidation Reduction Potentials (ORP) meter have been applied in this study. The result of AAS studies reveals that the inoculation with isolate was higher than control on copper and iron dissolution for 96 h and 40 h. In addition, the pH value of all experiment increased for 48 h. However, the redox value decreased for 48 h. This behavior was probably by the increasing of ferric ion concentration during the incubation time for 48 h.
